Hope in Spite of Dust

The golden sunrise cut through the curtain-less windows casting a warm glow across the filthy carpet, revealing more than a few dust bunnies that had surrendered to the ceiling fan’s breeze. The carpet was dirty and a sign of the hard times I attempted to survive.

Stepping out of bed was the first of many battles the day would bring; exhausting my efforts from the first moment my bare feet sank deep into the grungy carpet. Several months of darkness had settled into my life since the last time I borrowed a vacuum cleaner.

It had been two years since I had a job that paid the bills generated by a ten-year-old lifestyle based on simple cash flow – A history that might never repeat itself. The lifestyle was grounded on realistic parameters at the time. I had purchased my house at such an economical price that I didn’t worry about hard times reducing my wages by 20 or 30%.

But my foresight was shallow and didn’t see the back-to-back lay-offs that followed a pricey divorce. Nor did I give thought to the possibility that my vacuum cleaner would break down, while I experienced negative cash flow.

That’s not to say that I didn’t see signs of hope in my life. Even this morning I was greeted with a “thank you” email for my having shared several thoughts at a recent get-together. A generous Paypal deposit into my overdrawn account accompanied the note.

With a new form of thankfulness in my heart, I walked down the steps and saw a reminder of my babysitting duties. I’ve been dog and cat sitting for two weeks, while my son and his family travel in Wisconsin for a week of business followed by a week of vacation.

The kitchen and dinning room floors, which hadn’t been touched by a vacuum in months, had torn discarded plastic strewn all about from the night before. The dog had gotten into the bread drawer, pulled out a full loaf and two half loafs of bread, and devoured all trace evidence except for the plastic. Not a single crumb could be found.

I picked up several clumps of dirt along with the plastic and wondered how the solid layer of crud might impact my health or cause visitors to flee. I felt embarrassed by the sight, but knew there was nothing at the time that I could do to improve on the situation.

I longed for enough money to buy a new vacuum cleaner, but would settle on finding a friend willing to loan me their vacuum for a day or two every couple of weeks. I figured it wouldn’t be too bad to share, as my parents pooled lawn mowers, camping equipment and snow blowers with the neighbors as I grew up.

One thing is certain, when I finally get back on my feet, it’ll be on the cleanest carpet in town. I might even find myself vacuuming every day for a few weeks. And, if I ever make it back to my previous lifestyle, I’ll buy a couple extra vacuum cleaners to help out any friends who might be experiencing the same economic strains that I’ve unwillingly encountered.

Work the Plan and Plan Creative Exploration

The actors did a great job and we were ahead of schedule. It was time to move inside our location when the DP asked if his team could shoot a dolly running shot. The coverage wasn’t needed, but I always liked exploring other shots after we fulfill the preplanned list, so I gave him the approval and moved the rest of the cast and crew inside.

Since there wasn’t a lot of time to set up the dolly move, the assistant cameraman stepped inside the building and grabbed one of the wheel chairs that are available for visiting guests. The camera operator sat in the chair, held the camera at street level and then was pushed by a grip jogging behind him.

The shot of the actor’s feet running across the pavement was impressive and thanks to the stabilizing lens the shot was smooth. It also cut very well into the comedy and increased the visual pace to set up the next scene’s punchline. The idea worked so well that we decided to use a similar set up for the interior mall running scene.

I would never have thought of the selected shot or realized how well it set up the punchline if it weren’t for padding our shoot with time for creative thinking. Here are the steps I take when planning a shot list.

  1. Setting up a shot list based on key elements needed to move the story forward.
  2. Enhance the list with shots that stimulate an emotional response from the audience.
  3. Consider artistic shots that can set up or lead out a scene.
  4. Create a supporting list of unique shots that I’m interested in exploring.
  5. Estimate a number of shots for the DP to play with.

By budgeting time according to all five groupings of shots, I’m able to prepare the shoot for the greatest amount of flexibility. If the scene doesn’t go as planned or the actors struggle with their lines, we won’t get to all five lists, but I’ll know the story is covered.

This type of built in flexibility tends to find great shots that capture the audience’s attention, draws them deeper into the story and generates chatter during award season. In fact, I remember one creative opening shot that was brainstormed on set because we had paid for a crane and wanted to make sure we got the best possible use of it.

That forced perspective stimulated a long running crane shot that locked down into a visual effects shot, which brought in three awards. Prior to that shot, it had been impossible to use a crane shot as a visual effect lock down shot for a background plate, but our creative team brainstormed a solution that worked surprisingly well – And changed the way the industry shot background plates.

Exploration is always fun and exciting when the director is already confident his key shots have been covered. So planning time for those opportunities makes for a great film shoot.

Hollywood’s Propaganda

Hollywood is at it again with its propaganda. The latest surge of persuasion isn’t through entertainment, but press releases picked up by the news media. The two latest issues concern Israeli borders and consenting sex between two adults.

THE LETTER

In an open letter signed by several members from the film industry, led by Penelope Cruz, filmmakers and actors have denounced Israel’s incursion into Gaza. They have leveraged the Europa Press and other Spanish media to label Israel’s actions as “genocide.” The letter demands a cease-fire, lifting of the blockade in the Gaza Strip, and returning to the 1967 borders.

I always question the political perspectives of people who speak the words of others for a living. While they might be highly educated on a subject, there is something about their position that sends the message “propaganda.” It might be due to their visibility or access to millions of fans that causes me to question them, but it’s hard to consider their viewpoint without asking lots of questions.

For instance, why the 1967 borders? The actors blame the recent violence on the quarrel about Israeli’s land that the Palestinians “occupied” back in 1967. It’s their perspective that forcing Israel to give the land back would solve the problem and bring peace.

This brings me to a second question: Do the actors not know the Egyptians occupied the land from 1959 – 1967? I suppose they didn’t read their history books about the British’s occupation from 1923 – 1948. Nor did they read further back in history when the Palestinians took the land from Israel.

However, I will give the actors credit for some knowledge, as most of the arguments are formed from the post World War I ruling by the Geneva Convention and don’t give consideration to who occupied the land in earlier years. In fact, it’s pretty hard to find any information about the battles prior to World War I.

But my point isn’t to figure out if Israel has or doesn’t have the rights to the land, but instead confront the role of entertainers in the political arena. They certainly have the rights to express their perspective through freedom of speech. However, there is a fine line between voicing a viewpoint supported by reason and using your fame to verbalize an unfounded concept.

So Ms. Cruze, please speak up, but state the reasoning and facts behind your statement. Don’t just spout off emotionally charged words with no proposed logic of how your peace process would solve the century old debate.

SEX BETWEEN CONSENTING ADULTS

After The Bachelorette, Nick Viall asked Andi Dorfman during the live “After the Final Rose” telecast, why she had sex with him on the final night if she wasn’t in love with him. This fueled the media with articles about “Andi’s shocking sex secret.”

Several articles told readers how to feel and think about the issue. Most stated that it wasn’t a shameful moment, as it involved two consenting adults. Almost everything I read dismissed and corrected the public’s disgust around the situation.

I find it amazing how many articles attempted to correct America’s view that a bachelorette having a one-night stand before picking a different man the next day to marry was morally wrong. I was even more startled by how many people switched their viewpoints after the media told them how to think and communicate on the subject.

Are we really in an age when the popular determine what is right and wrong for the people?

Certainly there are many in the media willing to speak up for what they believe in, but I see few dissenters. Where is the press covering the moral majority? Or, how about psychologists suggesting that it’s okay to be taken aback by this woman’s actions. After all, we have the right to hold and cherish our own moral code separate from the liberal media’s voiced standards.

What’s funny for me was reading about the show’s perspective on condoms. They made it clear that none are provided in the fantasy suite, as there is no expectation of the activities that might ensue.

Don’t they realize that putting a couple alone into an intimate situation, after months being surrounded by cameras and crews, might create a temptation that is difficult to resist?

But more importantly, suggesting the show is not at fault for potential sexual encounters because they don’t provide condoms is silly. If you don’t want to be responsible for setting up the temptation, then don’t provide them a fantasy suite filled with romantic pleasures.

CAREFUL CONSIDERATION

Regardless of the voice entertainers give to politics or morals, it’s important that fans and audiences give careful consideration to all that is said before jumping on the politically correct bandwagon or voicing the “right” answers among their peers, friends and family. It’s important that we don’t accept Hollywood’s messages without a conscious attempt to first understand its ramifications.
