How Thinkers Can Harmonize with Feelers

I’ll never forget popping in to visit a logical friend trying to meet a deadline. He had been up for 30 hours, with 10 hours to go and no viable solution. I asked him if I could help, and he erupted in laughter, too tired to respond tactfully.

I suggested that if he gave me a shot, the worst that could happen is that he’d still be where he was, and the best thing was he’d be working on a new solution. He appeased me and told me the goal, what he had done to date, and some critical elements.

Since I think very differently than most, I asked a couple of questions and then made a recommendation. He quickly tried my suggestion in his programming and had a working model minutes later. He was blown away at how many hours he spent using logical principles to find a technical solution, and then I walked in without the needed knowledge and gave him the base solution.

He had a polished program six hours later and turned it in with four hours to spare. To this day, he can’t figure out how his expertise and logical process couldn’t do in 30 hours what his unknowledgeable, intuitive friend did in 20 minutes.

But, he was grateful that our collaboration and synergy got the job done, and his client loved the solution.

Thinkers and Feelers

Every day, we face two types of decision-makers: Thinkers and Feelers. Unfortunately, most only communicate well with one of those groups while unintentionally diminishing the value of the other.

In my Signature Talk, “Cinematic Advantage: Creating Memorable Conversations and Presentations,” I share how to speak to both groups of people at the same time without alienating either. But today, I will share several strategies Thinkers can use to harmonize with Feelers.

First, you need to know that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Thinkers (“T”), and Feelers (“F”) often form complementary partnerships, merging the realms of logical and emotional reasoning. They work well together when we focus on content appropriately.

However, melding these distinct thinking styles, especially in personal and professional environments, sometimes presents communication and mutual understanding hurdles. Below are several strategies Thinkers can employ to harmonize with the Feelers in their circle, fostering an atmosphere of compromise and teamwork while fostering a sense of joy.

1. Radiate Positivity: Non-Verbal Cues Matter

Feelers navigate using an emotional compass, highly receptive to verbal and non-verbal signals. Regardless of what is said, they will pick up on anyone filled with tension. Therefore, approaching sensitive discussions requires tranquility.

Mastering calmness through deep breathing exercises before sensitive conversations is crucial. Moreover, being mindful of our body language, from arm positioning to posture, can prevent conveying the wrong intent. When conversing with a Feeler on sensitive issues, these vital attributes require our focus.

2. Embrace Patience and Respect

Driven by empathy, Feelers prioritize others’ well-being, often at the expense of directness in their conversation. They tend to prioritize harmony over conflict, making honest emotional expression difficult.

Recognizing this, Thinkers should afford Feelers the latitude to articulate their thoughts fully despite circumstances. While Thinkers’ decisiveness is invaluable, appreciating diverse thought processes enhances interpersonal dynamics.

3. Foster a Culture of Honesty

Given Feelers’ aversion to upsetting the status quo, Thinkers should initiate spaces for candid dialogues, particularly regarding mutual expectations. Establishing a safe, welcoming environment that prioritizes transparent communication over diplomatic evasion encourages Feelers to voice their authentic thoughts, benefiting the collective in the long run. This will require Thinkers who want to benefit from the experience to maintain self-control and an open mind.

4. Prioritize Emotional Intelligence

While Thinkers instinctively seek pragmatic solutions, Feelers operate on an emotional frequency. Responding to Feelers’ concerns with stark logic can appear indifferent and will hinder productive conversation.

Striving to comprehend the emotions coloring their words, even without personally experiencing them, cultivates patience and fosters a climate where Feelers feel validated and inclined towards cooperation. They will become significant assets as they share the beneficial insights missed by Thinkers.

5. Identify Optimal Communication Channels

Understanding and aligning communication preferences is vital. For instance, while a Thinker might find text messages efficient, a Feeler could perceive them as detached, potentially triggering unwarranted concerns.

Transparency about communication styles and a willingness to adapt can mitigate misunderstandings and facilitate effective problem-solving. Also, remember that Feelers can read body language and overlook misspoken words, but not through texting.

6. Avoid Dismissing Their Emotions with Logic

Thinkers’ problem-solving prowess is commendable but not always appropriate when interacting with Feelers, who require emotional processing. Observing a Feeler dissect situations emotionally, though potentially perplexing, is akin to a Thinker’s logical evidence gathering.

Disregarding their methodology or displaying impatience can cause them to withdraw. Instead, offering empathetic support while they navigate their emotional journey is more constructive.

7. Validate Their Intuitive Strengths

Feelers, attuned to their emotions, often exhibit remarkable intuition. Their seemingly spontaneous logical conclusions stem from their deep emotional intelligence.

Discrediting this intuition can alienate them, whereas acknowledging its significance can ease collaborative efforts and enhance mutual trust. I’ve often found that most Feeler’s intuition is often more accurate than the short-term compiled data of Thinkers.

8. Provide Gentle Guidance

Balancing the relationship entails utilizing Thinkers’ logical prowess without overshadowing Feelers. Assisting them in navigating their emotional decision-making labyrinth by posing pertinent questions or refocusing their attention can be invaluable.

This synergy between Thinkers’ analytical abilities and Feelers’ emotional insights has transformative potential.

Embrace Openness

Effective communication with a Feeler doesn’t necessitate suppressing a Thinker’s inherent traits. Authenticity, coupled with a willingness to venture into emotional expressions, lays the foundation for profound connections.

This openness might involve Thinkers stepping out of their comfort zone, but in Feelers, this vulnerability is welcomed and reciprocated. As these personalities complement each other, a Feeler’s rationality can surface in response to a Thinker’s emotive side.

Through such heartfelt interactions, collaborative discussions thrive, enriching both parties.

Crafting a Valuable Core Story

Stories have an extraordinary power to transcend time and space, connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds through shared experiences and emotions. As a storyteller, you can create a profound bond with your audience by sharing your own narrative.

This personal tale, rooted in your core values and experiences, has the potential to inspire, empathize, and forge a lasting connection with your audience.

The Importance of an Authentic Story

In a world inundated with information, authentic storytelling has emerged as a vital means of cutting through the noise. Authenticity is the key to connecting. When you share your personal journey with honesty and vulnerability, you invite individuals into your world, fostering a sense of trust and empathy.

An authentic story delves beyond the surface, revealing the essence of who you are as an individual. This emotional connection is the cornerstone of a loyal and engaged audience. By weaving your values and experiences into your narrative, you create a compelling tale that resonates deeply with others.

Introspection and Self-Reflection

The journey of crafting a story, with what I call a cinematic advantage, begins with introspection and self-reflection. Take a moment to pause and look back at the path that led you to where you stand today. What were the turning points, challenges, and triumphs that shaped you?

Engage in journaling or meditation to delve into your memories, allowing hidden emotions and insights to surface. As you sift through your life’s tapestry, you’ll find the threads that connect the various chapters of your existence.

These highlights that surge to the forefront of your mind are typically cinematic in nature. They are easy to share so people can relive the moments with you, seeing what you experienced. This gives you an advantage over others who share anecdotes and quips to keep their audiences’ attention.

Identify Pivotal Moments

Every life is an anthology of pivotal moments that have left an indelible mark. These are the experiences that have changed, challenged, and empowered you. Whether it’s overcoming a daunting obstacle, embracing a life-altering opportunity, or weathering a storm of adversity, these moments define your character.

Take the time to identify these critical episodes in your life, for they will form the bedrock of a memorable visual story. Reflecting on both the highs and lows will infuse your narrative with a profound sense of authenticity and relatability. One of the best types of stories reflects on a flaw or failure that was overcome through a journey of stepping outside of yourself.

Understand Influential People

No individual exists in isolation; our lives are interwoven with the lives of others. In your story, acknowledge the people who have played pivotal roles in your journey. These may be family members, mentors, friends, or even chance encounters with strangers who left an indelible mark.

By incorporating their influence into your narrative, you pay homage to their significance and enrich your story with meaningful relationships. You also take the focus off of yourself and place it on those who helped you move forward. There is no better way of expressing a victory than sharing it with those who made it possible.

Shape Perspectives and Values

Our experiences shape not only our perspectives but also our core values. As you uncover your core values, consider the principles that guide your decisions and actions. Integrity, compassion, perseverance, or creativity—whatever these values may be, they represent the essence of who you are.

Infuse your cinematic story with these values, allowing them to anchor your narrative in authenticity. When readers witness your story aligned with your principles, they will resonate with the genuineness of your journey. They will also see your organically grown integrity.

Weave the Story Together

Now comes the pivotal task of weaving your story into a cohesive and captivating narrative—a visual and memorable story. Begin with a strong opening that sets the tone for your journey, drawing audiences in from the outset.

Utilize vivid descriptions and emotions to engage their senses, immersing them in your world. Create rising tension as you navigate the challenges, making your audience empathize with your struggles. Finally, offer a resolution that leaves a lasting impression—a lesson learned, a newfound perspective, or a sense of hope.

Embrace Vulnerability

In crafting your story, don’t shy away from vulnerability. Embracing your vulnerabilities can be a powerful way to connect deeply with your audience. Share moments of doubt, fear, or uncertainty, for everyone can relate to these aspects of the human experience.

By revealing your own struggles, you demonstrate your authenticity and inspire others to embrace their imperfections and find strength in their vulnerabilities. Nothing is more memorable than a story that takes you from rags to riches, procrastination to action, or ignorance to wisdom.

Leverage Your Values/Experiences

In a world that often feels disconnected, the art of storytelling serves as a bridge that unites us. Making your story a proverbial or actual cinematic experience has the potential to create a genuine bond with your audience, transcending barriers and inspiring a shared sense of humanity.

By unearthing your core values and experiences, you provide a pathway for others to relate, learn, and grow with you. Embrace the transformative power of personal storytelling and share your narrative with the world—discovering the beauty of our collective experiences.

Creating a memorable visual story begins with introspection and self-reflection, unearthing the core values and experiences that have shaped you. Identifying pivotal moments and understanding influential people will add depth and authenticity to your narrative. By aligning your story with your values and embracing vulnerability, you create an authentic and captivating tale that resonates with your audience.

Through the power of storytelling, we forge meaningful connections, break down barriers, and foster empathy—a gift that holds the potential to change lives and create a more connected and compassionate world. So, take a leap of faith and share your story with the world, for it is in our unique stories that we find our shared humanity.

Story: Unleash the Art of Personal Connection

The other day, I was at a business gathering with drinks and finger foods. Finding myself in a group of total strangers didn’t take long. The group was more like a click that made me feel disconnected.

Yet, I needed to find a way to connect with the group or slowly die inside over the three hours we spent together.

Thankfully, four people asked me similar questions simultaneously, and everyone laughed. This helped remove some of the moment’s awkwardness. Although, none of the questions were interesting, nor were they open-ended questions allowing me to respond with more than a sentence or two.

But I remembered a previous awkward circumstance where I responded with a story that captured everyone’s heart. It was a story that helped me to connect with people and indirectly invite them to allow me into their click for the night.

The audience found my story fun and entertaining, educational and inspirational. They immediately commented on how they could see my story unfold and loved its outcome. The story worked to connect us because I used what I call my Cinematic Advantage.

The Power of a Cinematic Advantage

In a digital world of fleeting connections, the power of a blockbuster movie exceeds the impact of many other media. Blockbusters have a cinematic advantage over other story formats because of their visual qualities, artistry, techniques, and budget.

For communication to be cinematic, there must be the deliberate creation of the visuals and all ancillary artistry. This requires planning, scripting, and execution. It is never by happenstance or tossed together. The culmination of the collaborators and their skills is a compelling story more significant than any individual can produce.

A compelling story cannot be underestimated. Stories have been a cornerstone of human communication for centuries, transcending cultures and generations—weaving the fabric of our shared experiences.

We all have a story to tell, a unique narrative that shapes who we are, what we believe in, and where we are headed. In our fast-paced society, where attention spans are shrinking, crafting a story that quickly and effectively communicates who we are to others has become vital.

When we think about the most influential figures in history, we often find that their ability to connect with people through stories was pivotal in their impact. Whether it was leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, or activists, their stories had the power to leave a lasting impression, fostering genuine connections that transcend time and distance.

Creating a memorable story with cinematic elements takes effort. Focusing on the three key elements of cinematic storytelling will give your story a Cinematic Advantage.

1. Foster Empathy and Relatability

Stories have a unique ability to touch the hearts and minds of individuals, transcending the barriers of language, culture, and background. When you share a story people can easily picture, you invite others into your world, allowing them to walk in your shoes and experience life through your lens.

By revealing your vulnerabilities, triumphs, and struggles, you create a space for empathy and relatability, enabling others to see themselves in your journey. This shared sense of humanity fosters a deeper connection between you and your audience, laying the groundwork for lasting relationships.

That night at the gathering, I was an aspiring entrepreneur sharing a failure and the lesson learned from the setback. I shared my exploration for a solution and how things came together, overcame my failure, and moved me leagues forward into a great future.

This open display of vulnerability and resilience resonates with others facing similar challenges, inspiring them to persevere in their endeavors. Fostering empathy and relatability drives connections.

2. Inspiration and Authenticity

A story that can be seen in your audience’s mind’s eye is a testament to your authenticity – the raw and unfiltered essence of who you are. It is a source of inspiration, showing others that it’s okay to be imperfect, stumble, and rise again. Everyone loves a blockbuster film that takes a character from rags to riches or from failure to success.

Sharing your personal journey gives others the courage to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their passions fearlessly. Authenticity in storytelling also builds trust and credibility, drawing people towards you and your message.

I remember my first experience watching a live-streaming broadcast on YouTube. A self-taught woman who knew her tech far beyond most techies had part of her technology go wrong. This ironic situation made her laugh, which led to her sharing an early story of her tech career failure.

She spoke from the heart with complete transparency and shared how she finally overcame her struggle.  That episode was so endearing that her small group of followers grew into more than 60,000 loyal followers within a few months. Her authentic story inspired everyone watching enough that they told their friends.

3. Forming Deeper Connections

Genuine human connections can feel elusive in a sea of social media and virtual connections. Our stories bridge that gap, forging a meaningful bond between you and your audience.

People who resonate with your experiences and values feel a sense of kinship, leading to stronger connections and a loyal community of supporters. A story can draw people into deeper connections than first thought possible due to the circumstances. We even find ourselves cheering on the main character in the story to move from failure to success.

Surprise Protection Request

I once heard a man talk about how his wife effectively disarmed him during their fights. He first shared about how most of their battles were based on a misunderstanding or miscommunication. Once the battles got heated, neither would listen to the other.

During one battle, instead of fighting back harder and more recklessly for the win, she decided to do the opposite and made herself vulnerable. His manly instincts kicked in, and he quickly became a protector instead of a fighter. He made sure she wasn’t hurt during that vulnerable moment. His love for her outweighed any temporary win that might be achieved.

Making a deeper connection with people shifts their focus to face the core values of life over the compelling battles we face. Those core values are the essence of a great story.

Now that we understand the importance of connecting through story, the following three steps will help you leverage your cinematic advantage by creating a memorable visual story.

1. Unearth Your Core Values and Experiences

A great story begins with introspection and unearthing the core values and experiences that have shaped you into who you are today.

Take a moment to reflect on your life journey. Identify the pivotal moments, challenges, and triumphs that have left a lasting impact on your life. Consider the people who have influenced you, the experiences that have molded your perspective, and the values that guide your decisions.

2. Frame Your Story with Purpose

Every compelling story has a purpose – a central theme or message that resonates with the audience. As you shape your story, define the purpose you want it to serve.

Do you want to inspire others, share lessons learned, or promote a cause you deeply believe in?

Understanding your purpose will help you craft a narrative that captivates your audience and leaves a lasting impression.

Begin with setting the stage. Introduce the main characters (yourself and others involved in your journey), describe the setting, and establish the context of your experiences. As you delve into the heart of your narrative, weave a compelling arc that keeps your audience engaged.

Describe your exploration process, the challenges you faced, the decisions you made, and the emotions you experienced along the way. Be authentic and honest, for it is in vulnerability that genuine connections are forged.

3. Tailor Your Story to the Audience

Just as every key is cut to fit a specific lock, your story must resonate with your audience to unlock their hearts and minds. Tailoring your story to suit your audience’s interests, emotions, and values is crucial for creating a deep and meaningful connection.

Consider who your audience is: their age, interests, and aspirations. Speak their language, both literally and figuratively.

If your story is intended for a professional setting, maintain a tone of professionalism and authority. Conversely, inject relatability and warmth into your storytelling when addressing a broader audience.

Your Transformative Journey

Crafting your story is a transformative journey beyond words on a page. It’s an introspective exploration of your past, a purposeful expression of your present, and a hopeful vision of your future. By sharing your authentic narrative, you open the door to genuine connections that have the power to inspire, support, and create positive change.

I encourage you to unearth your core values and experiences, frame your story with purpose, and tailor it to resonate with your audience. The world is waiting to hear your story, and through it, you’ll discover the beauty of personal connection and its profound impact on those around you.
